GymbaROO’s young learners took centre stage last week, as the Australian Ballet invited 3-5 year olds from GymbaROO Summer Hill and Kensington to participate in two exclusive ballet workshops at the iconic Sydney Opera House. 

The free workshops gave 30 children a unique opportunity to engage in movement and learning outside of the centre with one of the most prestigious companies in Australia. The experience included an Indigenous performance and a storytelling experience of Sleeping Beauty where they could be a part of the show using props and costumes. 

This is the second year GymbaROO has been invited to take part with the Australian Ballet recognising its alignment as an active learning program that nurtures movement, imagination and developmental growth. GymbaROO Summer Hill and Kensington owner, Bernie Good said the experience was incredible for the families at her centre.

“It was fabulous. The parents couldn’t believe it was a free event! The kids were all dressed up and so excited to be at the Sydney Opera House. Not many families have an incredible opportunity like this,” she said.

Each 60-minute workshop began with a 20-minute live duet performance, featuring two Indigenous performers incorporating Aboriginal dance and storytelling. With a live narration of the dance story, the children were captivated and able to understand the performance. Good said she was so proud of how well behaved the kids were. 

“The little ones were so entranced and engaged, I was really proud of them. It’s a real testament to the GymbaROO program that these kids could sit still for that period of time and really take it all in,” Bernie said.

Following the performance was the feature of the workshop, the story of Sleeping Beauty. As a hands-on experience, the children were invited to be a part of the story and re-enact scenes with props and engage with the performers. 

With movement and dance as the focus, the workshops reflected GymbaROO’s approach to fostering confidence and coordination through their fun, sensory-motor program. The foundations built in centres helped children and families embrace the opportunity and flourish in a world-class environment.
