When your toddler is on the move, so is their brain. Every roll, crawl, climb, and clap is helping to build new pathways for learning and shaping how they think, speak and interact with the world.
From about 12 months onwards, play becomes purposeful. Toddlers begin to walk, climb, copy, explore and test their limits, all while developing the coordination and confidence they’ll rely on for life.
If you’re searching for fun and enriching toddler activities to get out and about, there’s no shortage of options. From playgrounds and parks to GymbaROO–KindyROO classes across Australia, the right activities help toddlers explore, socialise and develop crucial physical and cognitive skills.
Here are ten engaging activities we do at GymbaROO–KindyROO, as well as some you can do at home, the park, or on your next excursion that nurture confidence, coordination and curiosity in your little one.
-
Climbing and Balancing
Climbing gives toddlers a whole-body workout, strengthening muscles, improving coordination, and teaching them to judge space and distance. You’ll often see this in action during our Penguin and Koala classes, where children explore soft climbing equipment and balance beams designed for their developmental stage
At home, you can recreate a safe mini climbing area or obstacle course with cushions, boxes and tunnels to encourage the same kind of exploration and confidence.
Want to make it harder? Add a “mission” like rescuing a teddy or collecting coloured blocks along the way.
Even a trip to the park can become a developmental adventure: walking along balance beams, climbing play equipment, or chasing bubbles all help refine coordination and body awareness.
-
Dance and Move to Music
Music and movement go hand in hand with brain development. Moving to a beat builds rhythm, timing and language skills. At GymbaROO–KindyROO, toddlers learn to bob, bounce and clap to songs that strengthen the connection between body and brain.
At home, put on your child’s favourite song and dance together (Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes is a great one). Try adding scarves, bells or wooden spoons to make it even more fun.
-
Push, Pull and Ride Activities
Push-and-ride toys are fantastic for strengthening balance, core control and coordination. In GymbaROO–KindyROO classes, toddlers love riding push-alongs, walking with a wide stance and exploring how their bodies move through space. These are all simple but essential toddler activities that support independence and mobility.
You can reinforce these skills at home by letting your toddler push or pull toys across different surfaces or move lightweight boxes or baskets. Even helping “push” the laundry basket across the room can turn into a fun, purposeful movement activity.
-
Upside-Down Play and Movement
Being gently held or moved upside down helps your toddler’s brain develop balance and spatial awareness, one of the key foundations for reading, writing and concentration later on.
In GymbaROO–KindyROO classes, we use safe, supported inversion activities to strengthen the vestibular system. At home or in the park, try playful moments like holding your toddler upside down for a giggle, gentle “aeroplane rides,” or pencil rolls on soft mats. Always keep the activity gentle and well supported.

-
Action Songs and Imitation Games
Clapping, pointing and copying actions are small movements with big developmental benefits. Copying songs and rhymes helps toddlers learn rhythm, timing and cause and effect.
In Penguin classes, toddlers start to follow one-step instructions and imitate simple actions, which are essential early milestones for communication. You can build on this at home with songs that include gestures (Open Shut Them, Baby Shark), or everyday imitation like waving goodbye, pretending to brush teeth, or playing peekaboo.
-
Sensory Activities for Toddlers
From squishy mats to soft balls, sensory play helps toddlers explore the world through touch, sound and movement. At GymbaROO–KindyROO, every piece of our equipment is designed to engage the senses, stimulating brain growth through texture, rhythm and repetition.
At home, try filling a small tub with safe, non-food materials such as fabric scraps, natural sponges, silicone balls, ribbons, or small beanbags. Encourage your toddler to grasp, shake and explore textured objects to help refine finger control and dexterity which are great for fine motor skills, the building blocks of skills like writing.
Add a mirror for visual exploration or play with textured mats to stimulate tactile awareness.
-
Storytime and Visual Learning
Looking at books and simple images helps toddlers build memory, attention and comprehension. During GymbaROO–KindyROO sessions, we use visual and auditory cues to link language, movement and rhythm, helping toddlers begin to recognise words, sounds and images.
At home, keep storytime interactive. Ask your toddler to point to pictures, act out a story, or find objects that match what’s in the book. These simple toddler activities improve language development and focus while making reading time fun. If you’re looking for additional engaging toddler activities outside of the home, local libraries also often offer storytelling and sing-along sessions during the week.

-
Climbing Stairs and Jumping Practice
As toddlers approach 18 to 24 months, they start climbing stairs and jumping, which helps to develop leg strength, balance and body control. In Koala classes, children practise climbing with assistance, learning to jump safely, and moving rhythmically to songs that build coordination.
At home, encourage safe stair practice by holding hands or using a single low step. You can also create gentle jumping games on soft mats or outside on grass. Try “jump over the line” or “two feet up, two feet down” to strengthen both muscles and confidence.
-
Group Play and Social Toddler Activities
Group play helps toddlers develop social skills like sharing, turn-taking and empathy. At GymbaROO–KindyROO, these skills are woven into every class, as children explore together while parents stay close for support and encouragement.
At home, visit your local playground, attend a community playgroup or simply invite a friend or neighbour for shared playtime. Activities like rolling a ball back and forth, building towers together or dancing in a circle teach patience, cooperation and joy in shared experiences.
If you’re heading out somewhere like the museum, get your toddler to explore textures, colours and sounds while learning to observe and point, which strengthens both focus and coordination.

Why Toddler Activities Matter
Every climb, clap and cuddle strengthens more than muscles; it builds the foundation for learning, communication and confidence. By combining structured toddler activities at GymbaROO–KindyROO with safe play at home, you give your child the best possible start in life.
At GymbaROO–KindyROO, we believe movement is the key to unlocking potential. Our programs give parents the tools, understanding and inspiration to keep learning going long after class ends.
