Self-Care Tips for Mums: 10 Easy Tips to Recharge at Home (And Out!)

As a mum, you wear many hats and it’s easy to put your own needs on the back burner. When the word “self-care” gets mentioned, many think it means splurging on a facial, but it’s more than that. Self-care can be simple and done in the comfort of your own home.

At GymabROO, we support families through the early years of development, and that includes mums! Whether you’re juggling a newborn, a toddler or multiple young children, here are 10 simple self- care tips designed with you in mind.

1. Claim the Small Moments

Self-care doesn’t have to mean long bubble baths or weekends away (although, won’t say no to those when the moment arises!). Think smaller. Even 5-10 minutes of intentional time for yourself can make a difference. A quick cuppa while your child naps, a few pages of a book while they play or a couple of deep breaths with your eyes closed – these little moments add up.

Try this:  Set a daily “mum minute” timer on your phone. It can be just 60 seconds to stretch, breath or do absolutely nothing.

2. Move Your Body

Exercise can boost your mood, energy and sleep but we know finding time (and motivation) is a challenge. It can start gently and realistic like a few yoga poses while the kids are on a mat, a dance-off in the lounge room or some stretches during story time.

If you want to dedicate some time, you can join a GymbaROO session. Our movement-based programs are designed to benefit your child’s development but are also fun to participate in for the parent too.

3. Nourish with Food

Mums can be so focused on everyone else’s meals that they forget their own. Keep a few easy, nourishing snacks on hand just for you. Think bliss balls, veggie sticks and hummus or a smoothie you can sip on the go. You could prepare a “mum shelf” in the fridge or pantry with your favourite snacks.

4. Ask for Help

Sometimes the most caring thing you can do is say, “Yes, I could use a hand.” Whether it’s your partner taking over bath time, a neighbour dropping off a meal, a friend watching the kids while you run errands or taking them to their grandparents place, take the opportunity. You don’t have to put pressure on yourself to do it all.

5. Get Outside While You Can

Fresh air can work wonders, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. A short pram walk around the block, sitting in the sun with your morning tea or a park visit will do the trick. No big outings are required, but a little change of scenery is always nice.

6. Screen-Free Me-Time

When the kids are finally down, it’s tempting to scroll for hours on your phone. Try swapping 10 minutes of screen time for journaling, reading, listening to a podcast or music that isn’t ‘The Wiggles’ or ‘Bluey’ soundtrack.

You can also extend this screen-free time to bonding with your partner. You could try cooking dinner together, painting,  playing cards or a board game for one night of the week.

7. At Home Pamper Session

We did say self-care doesn’t have to be a bubble bath, but it’s nice to do every now and then! Create your own mini day spa – light a candle, pop on some relaxing music and soak for at least 20 minutes.

If you don’t have a bath tub, you can extend your pamper session by applying a face mask, painting your nails and getting into your comfy pajamas.

8. Book a Massage or Facial

When the time is right, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation at your local day spa. Taking time to care for your body is incredibly restorative. Try a full body massage or a facial to ease out the tensions and stress that comes with being a parent. With many day spas offering 30 minute to 2-hour packages, you can choose how long you want to be away from home.

9. Connect with Other Mums

Feeling seen and heard is powerful, and talking with someone can be helpful to unwinding. Whether it’s a mum you met at GymbaROO, a childhood friend or even another mum from the park, connecting with someone who gets the good days and bad days can make a huge difference.

Try this: Start a weekly “mum check-in” message with a friend or family member. They will appreciate the message and will naturally want to see how you’re doing too.

10. Create a Simple Wind-Down Routine

Your days are likely to be full-on, so set yourself up for better rest with a mini evening ritual. It could be a warm shower, lighting a candle in your bedroom, some stretching or five minutes of journaling. Even one small signal to your body that the day is winding down can help calm your nervous system.

In Conclusion

Self-care doesn’t have to be big, expensive or time-consuming. It’s about tuning into what you need to feel a little more like yourself. At GymbaROO , we know the early years can be intense, but we also know that supported mums can help raise confident, happy children.
