In many households, a dynamic often emerges between two adults raising children: the ‘fun’ parent and the ‘practical’ parent. While we might like to think of ourselves as the perfect blend of both, tradition often assigns the role of ‘fun’ to the dads.

Dads, as the playful figures in the home, are known for encouraging adventurous play. They let kids roughhouse, scream with joy, jump from heights, balance on various surfaces, and often explore boundaries with a relaxed approach to rules. This playful spirit leads to cheeky victories and gives children a wonderful sense of freedom in their experiences.

Believe it or not, this kind of play is super important for children’s development! Research shows it’s linked to many positive social, emotional, and behavioural outcomes, like reduced aggression and increased self-regulation (Freeman & Robinson, 2022). In fact, Freeman and Robinson even found that rough play can boost a child’s working memory!

Bek Day from Kidspot (2021) highlights why having a fun parent around is so beneficial. She explores how secure attachment and trust between parent and child grow when kids know they can access all sides of a parent—both the nurturing and the silly!

These fun-loving characteristics of a playful parent are irreplaceable in our children’s lives. They foster connections, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Playtime involving calculated risks, learning from failure, and encouraging personality helps shine a light on imagination and creates a safe space for adventure.
